For the Hot Chocolate

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup chocolate shavings or curls
  • ½ cup chocolate sauce
  • ½ cup caramel sauce

Optional Toppings and Mix-Ins

  • 1 cup crushed chocolate cookies
  • 1 cup crushed graham crackers
  • ½ cup toffee bits
  • ½ cup colorful sprinkles
  • ½ cup chopped nuts

Cinnamon sticks

Ground cinnamon

  • Chocolate-covered pretzels
  • Flavored syrups such as vanilla caramel, peppermint, or hazelnut

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Chocolate Base

  • Add the whole milk and heavy cream to a large saucepan. Place the pan over medium heat.
  • Warm the mixture slowly. You want it hot but not boiling. Keep an eye on it because milk can quickly boil over if the heat is too high.
  • While the milk warms, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Add them gradually to the warm milk mixture while whisking continuously.
  • This helps prevent lumps and gives you a smooth, rich chocolate base.

Step 2: Add the Real Chocolate

  • Once the mixture is hot, add the finely chopped semi-sweet chocolate.
  • Continue whisking until the chocolate completely melts.
  • This is one of my favorite parts because the texture changes so beautifully. The cocoa powder provides that familiar deep chocolate flavor, while the melted chocolate gives the drink a richer and silkier finish.
  • Add the vanilla extract and stir again.
  • Taste the hot chocolate. If you prefer it sweeter, you can add a little more sugar. If you like a deeper chocolate flavor, add a few more pieces of dark chocolate.

Step 3: Keep It Warm

  • Transfer the prepared hot chocolate to a slow cooker set on the warm or low setting.
  • Stir occasionally to keep everything smooth.
  • Place a ladle nearby so guests can easily serve themselves.
  • If you do not have a slow cooker, you can keep the saucepan over very low heat. Just remember to stir occasionally and watch carefully to prevent the milk from scorching.

Step 4: Prepare the Toppings

  • Place each topping in a separate small bowl or jar.
  • I like arranging the toppings in groups. Put the marshmallows and whipped cream near the beginning, then place the chocolate toppings together. Add crunchy toppings such as cookies and toffee toward the end.
  • Sauces can go into small squeeze bottles or bowls with spoons.
  • If you are using cinnamon sticks, place them in a tall glass or jar where guests can easily grab one.

Step 5: Arrange Your Serving Area

  • Set the mugs or cups near the hot chocolate.
  • Next, place the slow cooker or serving container with the hot chocolate. Then arrange the toppings in an easy-to-follow line.
  • A simple order works best:
  • Choose a mug.
  • Pour hot chocolate.
  • Add mix-ins.
  • Add whipped cream.
  • Finish with toppings and drizzle.
  • This setup keeps the table organized and prevents everyone from reaching across each other.
