For the Dog Cake
- 1 ripe banana mashed
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup natural peanut butter
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened applesauce
- 1 –2 tablespoons water if needed
- Optional Dog-Friendly Topping
For a simple topping, you can use:
- 2 tablespoons plain unsweetened Greek yogurt
- 1 teaspoon natural peanut butter
- You can also leave the cake completely unfrosted. Honestly most dogs are not going to complain!
Optional Decorations
- If you want to make the cake extra cute consider:
- A few thin banana slices
- A tiny drizzle of natural peanut butter
- A couple of dog biscuits
- Small pieces of apple with seeds and core removed
- Keep decorations small and appropriate for your dog's size.
Step 1: Prepare the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease a small cake pan lightly or line the bottom with parchment paper.
If you're using silicone molds, make sure they are placed on a sturdy baking sheet before filling them.
Step 2: Mash the Banana
Place the ripe banana in a mixing bowl and mash it thoroughly with a fork.
It does not have to be perfectly smooth. A few tiny banana pieces are completely fine and can actually add little pockets of banana flavor throughout the cake.
Step 3: Add the Wet Ingredients
Add the egg, peanut butter, and unsweetened applesauce to the mashed banana.
Stir everything together until well combined.
The mixture should look creamy and fairly thick.
If your peanut butter is particularly thick, don't worry. Keep stirring until everything comes together.
Step 4: Add the Dry Ingredients
Add the whole wheat flour and baking powder.
Gently stir until you have a thick cake batter.
Try not to overmix. Once you no longer see dry flour, you're done.
If the batter seems unusually thick, add a tablespoon of water and mix again. Add another tablespoon only if necessary.
You want a batter that is thick enough to hold its shape but still easy to spread into the pan.
Step 5: Fill the Pan
Spoon the batter into your prepared pan.
Use a spatula or the back of a spoon to smooth the top.
Because this is a small cake, the batter will not take very long to bake.
Step 6: Bake
Place the pan in the preheated oven.
Bake for approximately 20–25 minutes, depending on the size and depth of your pan.
The cake should look lightly golden and feel firm in the center.
Insert a toothpick into the middle. If it comes out mostly clean, the cake is ready.
Avoid overbaking because you want a soft texture rather than a dry cake.
Step 7: Cool Completely
Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for several minutes.
Then carefully transfer it to a wire rack.
Let it cool completely before adding any topping.
I know this is the hardest part because the kitchen smells like warm peanut butter and banana, but don't rush it. A hot cake can make the yogurt topping melt and become messy.
