For the cake:
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1 ripe banana mashed
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup fresh blueberries
- 2 tablespoons natural peanut butter
- 1/4 cup water
Optional topping:
- 1/4 cup plain unsweetened Greek yogurt
- 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter
- A few extra blueberries for decoration
- Important ingredient note
- Always check your peanut butter label carefully before using it for a dog treat. Make sure it does not contain xylitol which is extremely dangerous for dogs.
- Choose plain unsweetened peanut butter with simple ingredients whenever possible.
- For the yogurt use plain and unsweetened yogurt without added sugar or artificial sweeteners.
- How to Choose the Best Ingredients
Rolled Oats
- Rolled oats are the foundation of this cake.
- You can blend them into a fine flour using a blender or food processor. Homemade oat flour gives the cake a smoother texture and helps the ingredients hold together nicely.
- If you prefer a slightly more rustic texture you can leave some of the oats less finely ground. Just remember that a finer oat flour generally creates a softer cake.
- Choose plain oats without added flavorings or sweeteners.
- Fresh or Frozen Blueberries
- Fresh blueberries are wonderful in this recipe because they stay juicy and add bright little bursts of flavor.
- Frozen blueberries can also work. If using frozen berries you can add them directly to the batter without thawing them first.
- Smaller blueberries tend to distribute more evenly through a small cake.
- You can also gently crush a few blueberries before folding them into the batter. This creates beautiful little streaks of purple-blue color throughout the cake.
Ripe Banana
- A ripe banana is ideal because it is easier to mash and naturally sweeter.
- Look for a banana with a few brown spots on the peel. It does not need to be extremely soft but a ripe banana will blend smoothly into the batter.
- The banana also helps keep the cake moist.
Peanut Butter
- Peanut butter adds richness and a flavor that makes this cake feel extra special.
- Because peanut butter is rich you do not need much. Just a couple of tablespoons give the batter a lovely nutty aroma and flavor.
- Again always make sure your peanut butter is free from xylitol.
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Prepare your small cake pan by lightly greasing it or lining it with parchment paper.
I recommend using parchment paper if possible because it makes removing the cake much easier.
Step 2: Make the Oat Flour
Place the rolled oats in a blender or food processor.
Blend until the oats become a fine, flour-like texture.
It does not have to be perfectly powdery. A little texture is completely fine.
Transfer the oat flour to a mixing bowl.
Step 3: Mash the Banana
Peel your ripe banana and place it in a separate bowl.
Mash it thoroughly with a fork until mostly smooth.
A few small lumps are perfectly fine.
The mashed banana will add moisture and natural sweetness to the cake, so make sure it is evenly mashed before mixing.
Step 4: Mix the Wet Ingredients
Add the mashed banana, egg, peanut butter, and water to a large mixing bowl.
Stir everything together until the mixture looks smooth and well combined.
The peanut butter may take a little extra stirring, especially if it is thick.
Step 5: Add the Oat Flour
Add the blended oat flour to the wet ingredients.
Stir gently until a thick batter forms.
The batter should be scoopable and moist but not dry.
If it looks too thick, add a tiny splash of water.
Avoid adding too much liquid because the blueberries will also release moisture while baking.
Step 6: Fold in the Blueberries
Gently fold the blueberries into the batter.
Try not to crush all of them.
I like leaving most of the blueberries whole because they create those lovely juicy pockets inside the finished cake.
Save a few blueberries if you would like to decorate the top later.
Step 7: Fill the Cake Pan
Spoon the batter into your prepared cake pan.
Use a spatula to smooth the top.
You can gently tap the pan on the counter once or twice to help settle the batter.
Because this is a small cake, it should not need a long baking time.
Step 8: Bake the Cake
Place the cake pan in the preheated oven.
Bake for approximately 20 to 25 minutes, or until the center feels set and a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out mostly clean.
Remember that baking times can vary depending on the size and material of your pan.
The top should feel firm but not hard.
Step 9: Cool Completely
Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for several minutes.
Then carefully transfer it to a cooling rack.
This step is important.
Do not add yogurt or peanut butter topping to a warm cake because it can melt and slide off.
Allow the cake to cool completely before decorating.
