Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Large skillet (optional, for pre-browning)
  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Aluminum foil
  • Oven mitts
  • Wooden spoon or spatula

Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1.5 lbs 680g ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley

For the Bake:

  • 3 medium potatoes thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion sliced into rings
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 can 10.5 oz cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Optional Add-ins:

  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese for topping
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Hamburger Mixture

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, and parsley.
  • Using your hands (yes, it’s messy but worth it!), mix everything until just combined. Don’t overmix, or your patties might turn out tough.
  • Shape the mixture into 4–6 oval patties. I like making them slightly thick because they stay juicy during baking.

Step 2: Prepare the Baking Dish

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  • Lightly grease your baking dish. Then layer the sliced potatoes evenly at the bottom. Sprinkle a little salt and pepper over them.
  • Next, add a layer of onion rings. This layer adds sweetness and depth to the dish as it cooks.

Step 3: Add the Hamburger Steaks

  • Place the prepared hamburger patties on top of the potato and onion layers.
  • If you prefer a deeper flavor, you can quickly brown the patties in a skillet before placing them in the dish. I sometimes do this when I have extra time—it adds a nice crust.

Step 4: Prepare the Gravy

  • In a bowl, mix together:
  • Beef broth
  • Cream of mushroom soup
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Stir until smooth.
  • Pour this mixture evenly over the patties and vegetables. Make sure everything is nicely coated—this is what makes the dish so rich and flavorful.

Step 5: Bake

  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and place it in the preheated oven.
  • Bake for 60 minutes.
  • After that, remove the foil and bake for another 15–20 minutes. This helps the top slightly brown and the sauce thicken.

Step 6: Optional Finishing Touch

  • If you’re adding cheese, sprinkle it on top during the last 10 minutes of baking.
  • Once done, remove from the oven and let it rest for 5–10 minutes before serving. This helps everything settle and makes serving easier.
