For the Hamburger Steaks:
- 1.5 lbs 680g ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 small onion finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
For the Bake:
- 3 medium potatoes thinly sliced
- 1 large onion sliced into rings
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 can 10.5 oz cream of mushroom soup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Optional Add-ins:
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1/2 cup shredded cheese for topping
- Fresh parsley for garnish
Step 1: Prepare the Hamburger Mixture
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, and parsley.
Using your hands (yes, it’s messy but worth it!), mix everything until just combined. Don’t overmix, or your patties might turn out tough.
Shape the mixture into 4–6 oval patties. I like making them slightly thick because they stay juicy during baking.
Step 2: Prepare the Baking Dish
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
Lightly grease your baking dish. Then layer the sliced potatoes evenly at the bottom. Sprinkle a little salt and pepper over them.
Next, add a layer of onion rings. This layer adds sweetness and depth to the dish as it cooks.
Step 3: Add the Hamburger Steaks
Place the prepared hamburger patties on top of the potato and onion layers.
If you prefer a deeper flavor, you can quickly brown the patties in a skillet before placing them in the dish. I sometimes do this when I have extra time—it adds a nice crust.
Step 4: Prepare the Gravy
Step 5: Bake
Cover the dish with aluminum foil and place it in the preheated oven.
Bake for 60 minutes.
After that, remove the foil and bake for another 15–20 minutes. This helps the top slightly brown and the sauce thicken.
Step 6: Optional Finishing Touch
If you’re adding cheese, sprinkle it on top during the last 10 minutes of baking.
Once done, remove from the oven and let it rest for 5–10 minutes before serving. This helps everything settle and makes serving easier.
